Meteorology is the science of the atmosphere.  It is intrinsically interdisciplinary, requiring knowledge from fields such as physics, mathematics, computer science, chemistry, oceanography, economics, and the social and behavioral sciences. Roughly one-third of the U.S. economy is weather sensitive, including the agriculture, transportation, and energy sectors, and global economies are strongly influenced by climate phenomena such as El Nino.  In addition, many environmental problems are influenced by atmospheric processes, including air pollution and visibility impairment, wildland fires, the ozone hole, and global warming.  Meteorologists work to provide weather and climate forecasts that protect lives and properties, enable sound strategic and economic planning, and advance our ability to understand and predict climate variability and change.
