General Interests
I am particularly interested in the genesis of metallic and non-metallic mineral resources. More broadly my interests extend to the fields of mineral exploration, process mineralogy, and the mineralogical dimensions of environmental problems. I integrate field studies with laboratory analysis using a variety of analytical methods including optical microscopy, x-ray diffraction, and electron probe microanalysis.
Research Projects
Geochemistry of Tourmaline. Tourmaline is a common phase associated with porphyry copper deposits (PCD) and other deposits. The objective of this project is to determine if tourmaline associated with PCD have a unique signature and whether small, non-productive systems can be distinguished from large, productive systems. Two case studies are being carried out- one in Sonora, Mexico and another in Northern Chile. Jason Babcock and Jenny Szabo, M.S. students are currently involved in the project.
High-grade Gold in Epithermal, High-sulfidation Systems. The objective of this project is to determine define the detailed paragenesis of gold in the Goldfield District, NV. Gold appears to have precipitated at least six times in three broad episodes accounting for some of the high grades observed. Junyoung Sung, a M.S. student, is currently involved in the project.
Precious Metals in Polymetallic Deposits. The purpose of this project is to characterize the ore mineralogy and variations in the chemical compositions of solid-solution minerals such as tetrahedrite-freibergite, sphalerite, and electrum in polymetallic deposits. A detailed study of the ore minerals and ore zoning is expected to lead to an understanding of the ore controls and genesis of the deposit, and to more efficient exploration for additional reserves. Denise Chirban, an M.S. student is currently involved in the project.
