Student Involvement

The College of Mines and Earth Sciences has a wide range of student clubs and organizations that help you interact with your fellow students, attend different events throughout the year, and get the most out of your college experience!

American Meteorological Society Student Chapter at the University of Utah

The AMS student chapter is for students at the University of Utah who are interested in meteorology and the surrounding sciences, such as air chemistry, climate change, environmental instrumentation, snow science, etc. Most students in the organization have declared majors of Atmospheric Science and range from freshman to senior. The AMS organizes various activities for students that range from hikes and weather balloon launches to community outreach events.

Energy Club, AKA the American Association of  Petroleum Geologists (AAPG)

The Student Chapter Program of AAPG is made up of collegiate groups of geoscience students and is one of the world's foremost co-educational programs within the geoscience sector, with over 245 chapters. It provides students the opportunity to develop leadership skills and serves as a focal point for developing a feeling of professionalism through meeting industry representatives (aapg.org).

Geo Club

Geo club aims to enhance the practical skills of geology students, including fieldwork, mapping, sample collection, and interpretation, by providing opportunities to learn industry-relevant software, going on field trips, knowledge sharing, networking, and career development.

Student Association of Geological Engineers (SAGE)

SAGE aims to build a community of geological engineering students and provide those students with tools for success both academically and professionally. This is a brand-new organization as of September 2025, and we're looking forward to an academic year full of connection and opportunity.

The Student Advisory Committee (SAC)

The Student Advisory Committee (SAC), is a student group established to promote communication and interaction among students, faculty, staff and administrators. SAC is both an academic and social organization for the department. It is designed to promote academic and social activities, provide service opportunities, encourage participation in the departmental activities, and promote academic achievement. SAC is the voice of the undergraduate student body in the Department of Materials Science and Engineering.

Society for Mining, Metallurgy & Exploration (SME)

To promote continued professional growth for members in the area of mining metallurgy and exploration, to encourage professional responsibility, to educate both the members and the public about the mining industry, and perform community service. The SME U of U Student Chapter brings students together during their college years to build a broad understanding of the minerals industry and a sense of unity and identity with their peers. The Student Chapter is the link between the school and business, which enables each student to engage in the type of activity necessary for professional development.

Mine Rescue

The Mine Rescue Team at the University of Utah consists of a group of students, who have been working hard to build a solid foundation focused on mine rescue training, as well as following a sound mine health and safety mentality. We believe that the most important thing to come out of a mine is the miner and their well-being. Students of this group are currently learning and applying training standards, prescribed by the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA), to gain a better understanding on how to effectively aid those in need during a mine catastrophe and return a mine to normal operating conditions. The team is also actively training to compete in mine rescue competitions held throughout the United States.
